David Berger and The Sultans of Swing
Acclaimed for their superior musicianship and a sound that is both sophisticated and earthy, the Sultans of Swing create a natural bridge from the great bands of the '30s and '40s to hip 21st century jazz and swing audiences. This 16-piece band includes experienced veterans along with fiery young jazz musicians who have formed a powerful team that addresses the blues and swing with style.
Jazz composer, arranger and conductor David Berger is recognized internationally as a leading authority on the music of Duke Ellington and the Swing Era. Conductor and arranger for the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra from its inception in 1988 through 1994, Berger has transcribed more than 500 full scores of classic recordings including over 350 works by Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn. In 1996 Berger collaborated with choreographer Donald Byrd to create the Harlem Nutcracker, a full-length 2-hour dance piece that expands the Tchaikovsky/Ellington/Strayhorn score into an American classic.
The 15-piece band assembled to play this show has stayed together and continues to play Mr. Berger's music for listeners and swing dancers all over the United States and Europe. The Sultans of Swing featuring vocalist Aria Hendricks have 2 cd's out and carry on the tradition of the great bands of the 1930's and '40's bringing swinging jazz to a new generation. |

Scatman John
John Paul Larkin (March 13, 1942 - December 3, 1999), better known by his stage name Scatman John, was an American jazz musician and singer who created a fusion of scat singing and dance music, best known for his 1994 hit "Scatman (Ski Ba Bop Ba Dop Bop)".
A stutterer, John liked to say scatting was a process of "turning my biggest problem into my biggest asset". Scatman John has sold millions of recordings worldwide and was named "Best New Artist" in the Echo Awards in both Japan and Germany. He was a recipient of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association's Annie Glenn Award for outstanding service to the stuttering community and was inducted into the United States National Stuttering Association Hall of Fame. Born in El Monte, California, Larkin suffered from a severe stammer "since [he] started talking," which led to an emotionally traumatic childhood. Even at the peak of his success in 1995, journalists reported that during interviews he "hardly finishes a sentence without repeating the phrase at least six or seven times." At age 12 he began to learn piano, and was introduced to the art of scat singing at 14 through records by Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong, amongst others. The piano provided him with a means of artistic expression to compensate for his speech difficulties. He remarked in a 1996 interview that "playing piano gave me a way to speak... I hid behind the piano because I was scared of talking."
Larkin became a professional jazz pianist in the 1970s and '80s, playing many gigs in jazz clubs around Los Angeles. In 1986, he released the self-titled album John Larkin on the Transition label, copies of which are now extremely rare. He claimed to have "hundreds of them lying around in [his] closet at home". Around this time, alcoholism and drug addiction were also beginning to take a hold of his life. When fellow musician and friend Joe Farrell, who also had a drug problem, died of bone cancer in 1986, Larkin decided to beat his habits. He eventually did so, largely with the help of his new wife Judy, also a recovering alcoholic. "You have talent," she told him. "I'm going to make something out of you." To advance his career in 1990, Larkin moved to Berlin, Germany. From there he discovered the appreciative jazz culture and started playing jazz gigs. Here he decided to add singing to his act for the first time, inspired by the standing ovation he received for his rendition of the song "On the Sunny Side of the Street." Soon after, his agent Manfred Zahringer from Iceberg Records in Denmark thought of combining scat-singing with modern dance music and hip hop sounds. Larkin was resistant at first but BMG Hamburg was open.
Larkin was mainly scared that listeners would realize he stuttered, so Judy suggested that he talk about it directly in his music. Working with dance producers Ingo Kays and Tony Catania, he recorded the first single, "Scatman (Ski-Ba-Bop-Ba-Dop-Bop)," a song intended to inspire children who stuttered to overcome adversity. He adopted the new name and persona of Scatman John. In 1995, at age 52, Larkin became a worldwide star. Sales of his debut single were slow at first, but gradually reached #1 in many countries and sold over six million records worldwide. "Scatman (Ski-Ba-Bop-Ba-Dop-Bop)" which charted quite highly across Europe remains his biggest-selling and most well-known song. He later followed up with the song "Scatman's World" entering the UK Singles chart at #10, which met lesser but still notable success, selling a million copies and charting highly throughout Europe.
Following the success of these two singles, he released his debut album, also entitled Scatman's World, which entered the top 10 album charts in many countries including his then home Germany as well as in Switzerland, Finland and Norway, which eventually sold millions of copies worldwide. He began a promotional and concert tour of Europe and Asia. "At an appearance I did in Spain, the kids screamed for five minutes straight, I couldn't start the song", he once recounted. The second Scatman John album, Everybody Jam!, was released in 1996. While nowhere near as successful on an international level as his debut, the album and accompanying single took off in Japan, the country in which he would see success on a larger scale than anywhere else in the world. He was so popular there that Japanese toy stores sold dolls of his likeness and he appeared on phone cards and Coca Cola cans. The Japanese version of Everybody Jam! included a total of five bonus tracks, including the hit singles there "Su Su Su Super Kirei" and "Pripri Scat", which were commissioned by Japanese companies for commercials for cosmetics and pudding respectively. The Ultraman franchise even jumped on the Scatman bandwagon, releasing a single entitled "Scatultraman", the cover art of which featured the Ultraman characters in hats and moustaches. In 1999, Larkin released his third and final album as Scatman John, Take Your Time. It was later revealed that he had been battling ill health since late 1998. He continued work on the album despite being told to take it easy from his substantial workload. He was later diagnosed with lung cancer and soon went into intensive treatment. He maintained a positive attitude throughout, declaring that "Whatever God wants is fine by me... I've had the very best life. I have tasted beauty". He died in his Los Angeles home on December 3, 1999. He was cremated and was buried at sea near Malibu, California. |

Dead Can
Dance
Brendan Perry and Lisa Gerrard were and are Dead Can Dance. Their highly successful 2005 live reunion makes it even less appropriate to speak of Dead Can Dance in the past tense, but their music has lived on in such a palpable way since their partnership was initially dissolved in the mid-1990s that it's always felt strange to consign them to a purely historical status.
Brendan and Lisa made collages out of musical lineages, lost tribes and cultures long since forgotten - and by giving new life to so much from the past, they created a genuinely timeless body of work. They may or may not go on to make more music together but, whatever the future holds, the music that they have already made remains very much alive. |

Detroit Grand Pubahs
The Detroit Grand Pubahs are Dr. Toefinger (Andy Toth) and Paris the Black Fu (Mack Goudy, Jr.). Both are from Detroit, Michigan, United States. They combine electro, hip hop, and booty-bass with a good dose of bawdy humour to create a unique sound.
Both of the Pubahs started in music at an early age, with Toth starting to play drums in various local bands at 16. Vocalist Goudy began DJing at a similar age having been influenced by Jeff Mills' radio mix shows. After leaving school Toth took a job as an sound engineer at a local recording studio while Goudy continued to DJ and sing as one half of Heckle and Jeckle, with Jon Billebob Williams.
While both were active on the Detroit scene they did not meet until they both happened to be working in the same restaurant in Michigan. They got together and started producing music; their first release was "Sandwiches" released in 2000 on Throw Records and as its popularity spread it was picked up by New York based Jive Electro.
Further acclaim and publicity was generated by their live show.
In 2001 they continued to tour their live act and released their first album, Funk All Y'all, on Intuit-Solar. More singles 2003's "The Clapper" and 2004's "Big Onion" followed on Poker Flat Recordings. The Pubahs' second album, Galactic Ass Creatures from Uranus, was released in 2004. At the same time, Toth left for other adventures and was replaced by The Mysterious Mr O.
After that they continued to tour and they met a lot of people. In 2006 they hired Domgue as Sax player and Mo T as guitarist for their liveshows.
The third album "Nuttin' butt funk" was released in 2008 on their own label Det.Ele.Funk.
For some liveshows, a new drummer, Emeric Di Paolo, plays with them. |

Kalahari Surfers
The Kalahari Surfers is the moniker of South African composer and musician Warrick Sony. It began as a solo recording project in the early 1980s to subvert the total media and propaganda onslaught of P. W. Botha's Apartheid South Africa. With guest musicians, the Kalahari Surfers recorded five albums, toured Europe and played concerts in East Berlin, Moscow, Riga and Leningrad. The Kalahari Surfers began with a home recorded cassette release in 1981, and built a reputation as being one of the most politically radical musical forces in South Africa. Their second release was a double single package released by Pure Freude Records. German group Can were involved with this label and, along with other krautrock bands, were an important influence on the Surfers sound at this time. Shifty Records tried to release their 1982 release album Own Affairs but could not find a vinyl pressing plant who would do it. The reasons given by EMI were that it was "too political".
Those who owned the means of production, especially the electronic media, were controlled firstly by themselves (self-censorship i.e. those too afraid to put a step wrong made it impossible for others to realise their objectives) and then by the State: anything which had made it into the mainstream which was found undesirable was then banned.
Chris Cutler's London based Recommended Records pressed the album and set up an alliance that continues to this day. Cutler (ex-Henry Cow drummer) helped set up tours and in 1985 they put out the second album Living in the Heart of the Beast to critical acclaim. The album title was taken from the title of a Tim Hodgkinson composition, "Living in the Heart of the Beast" on the Henry Cow album In Praise of Learning (1975). A unique South African album, Living in the Heart of the Beast pushed the barriers of local independent music. Stylistically it ranged from dub-reggae, art rock, rap, and punk Zappa-ish in places (with the use of rapid tape splice edits and juxtaposing of ironic bits of state propaganda broadcasts).
The Surfers moved to London to complete the third album Sleep Armed and to perform live concerts there and in Europe. The Kalahari Surfers were seen as far afield as Holland, Germany, Switzerland, France, Luxembourg, Moscow, Leningrad, Riga, East Berlin and London. The 1980s ended with the release of a forth album Bigger Than Jesus which was officially banned in South Africa followed by concerts in the Soviet Union and East Germany (the first South African rock group to do that).
The new millennium consolidated the New South Africa and new technologies influenced the Surfers sound. The avant garde moved into the mainstream and, in the clubs of Cape Town, the Surfers found a younger audience who were drawn to their eclectic electro world-dub, sound. The new millennium saw a number of releases through African Dope Records and Microdot Records:
Akasic Record was critically acclaimed and saw the licensing of tracks for various films commercials and television,
Muti Media (which featured a sculpture by artist Brett Murray on the cover),
Conspiracy of Silence, and
Panga Management followed.
Remix projects include work for M.E.L.T. 2000 on the Busi Mhlongo remix album as well as an "African Cheese" set for the BBC Food series Cooked in Africa. Recent work includes:the Wiesen Festival in Austria 2006 and the Unyazi Electronic Music symposium at Wits University, Johannesburg,

Arthur Miles
Born in Indianapolis, for over 35 years Arthur Miles can boast a consolidated and successful career in the international music world. He started at a very young age in Los Angeles, where the enveloping music of his uncle, the great guitarist Wes Montgomery, and his father's winning night club "Arthur's" allowed him to observe, absorb and jam with the most famous Blues, Jazz and Soul artists of the time. From the age of 14 he has played as a professional musician with his own band. He perfected his singing technique at the School of Natural Voice at Los Angeles tutored by Patricia Warner, and contemporarily completed his formal studies in musical theory. The high level of musicianship attained together with his natural talent made him the most popular and in-demand artist of the moment. He also majored in journalism at the Pasadena City College, a qualification that preludes his ability with words and becomes apparent in his many songs. Cocteau Twins
The Cocteau Twins were a Scottish alternative music band active from 1979 to 1997, known for complex instrumentation and atmospheric, nonlyrical vocals.
Though formed in the post punk and new wave era, the Cocteau Twins tended to defy concise categorization, and their music was a key influence on dream pop. Although the entire band earned much critical praise, Elizabeth Fraser's distinctive vocals received the most attention. At times barely decipherable, Fraser seemed to veer into glossolalia and mouth music. Allmusic reviewer Ned Raggett writes that "part of her appeal is how she can make hard-to-interpret lyrics so emotionally gripping." |
