CANTUS ANNOUNCES THE NATIONAL RELEASE OF DEEP RIVER - A TREASURY OF AFRICAN-AMERICAN SPIRITUALS.
"We worked very hard to unearth long-forgotten arrangements by some of the most important figures in the history of the Spiritual as well as sing some of the true staples of American choral music," says Erick Lichte, Artistic Coordinator for the ensemble as well as Deep River's Executive Producer.
The Spiritual represents the musical melting pot of America like no other type of song by at once revealing its African roots while reflecting the American experience with music that speaks of both hardship and hope. With well known and out-of-print arrangements of these immortal songs, Deep River delves into the roots of American music by exclusively featuring works by preeminent first and second generation African-American composers like Harry T. Burleigh, William Dawson, John W. Work III, and Jester Hairston.
"This music is historically important to America in so many ways. The Spirituals are sentinels of the horrible history of slavery in this country and are remarkable for their ability to express defiance, sorrow, and hope all at once. They express the deepest feelings of an oppressed people yet communicate universal emotions which all people can recognize for themselves. The arrangers and arrangements presented on this album represent the best and brightest of the first two generations of African-American composition. One of the aims of this album was to get to the root of the tradition of the arranged Spiritual for the classical singer - a tradition established by artists like the Fisk Jubilee Singers, Marion Anderson and Paul Robeson and continued on into 21st century," says Lichte.
Recorded by Stereophile Magazine editor John Atkinson in 24-bit sound at the Washington Pavilion for Arts and Sciences in Sioux Falls, SD, Deep River is a treat for the ears and a balm for the soul.
About Cantus Enjoying a successful blend of national tours, subscription concerts in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and Saint Paul and recording projects, Cantus is gaining recognition as one of America's finest professional male vocal ensembles. The ensemble's performances are met with overwhelming praise for its unique blend of youthful vitality and polished nuance. Their repertoire spans many periods and genres, including Gregorian chant, Renaissance motets, contemporary sacred works, art songs, world music, spirituals, and pop. Since then, Cantus has performed more than 400 concerts across the nation during the past seven years. In September 2000, Cantus established itself as a full-time nonprofit arts organization based in Minnesota. In summer 2002, Cantus sang to great acclaim at the Oregon Bach Festival and at the Sixth World Symposium on Choral Music in Minneapolis. In summer 2003, Cantus made its first European appearance singing at the Pollyfolia festival in Normandy, France. For the last three years Cantus has also appeared in concert with the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra in a holiday program titled Cantus and Carols.
