The ten acoustic guitarists featured in this collection of solo performances represent a variety of slack key or ki ho'alu styles, from traditional to contemporary. The unusual harmonies and overtones created by each artist's individual tuning reflect the beauty of the Hawaiian islands where slack key guitar was born.
RANDY LORENZO, recipient of 11 HOKU Awards, former member of the Peter Moon Band, founding member of Olomana, recorded with Cecilio and Kapono (Honolulu City Lights album), recorded 2 CDs with Gabby Pahinui, is a former member of Country Comfort. Randy grew up in Waimanalo, Hawaii. A seasoned Hawaiian music veteran, he is also a well loved Hawaiian singer songwriter.
BRYAN KESSLER, a multi HOKU award recipient: the former leader of Hawaiian Style Band (with Wade Cambern and Robi Kahakalau), grew up in Philadelphia, attended Berklee College of Music in Boston, later attended the Guitar Institute of Technology, moved to Hawai'i in 1983, and continued to develop his acoustic guitar style by exploring slack-key tunings in a pop format. Bryan's most recent project as a solo performer and singer songwriter is Heart Jams (Wire and Wind). JEFF PETERSON grew up on Haleakala Ranch on Maui and he is the son of a Paniolo (Hawaiian cowboy). He currently teaches guitar at the University of Hawaii, is a leading slack key guitar solo recording artist, and is fluent a variety of guitar styles including jazz and classical, which has enhanced his personal slack key style. Jeff has performed with Eric Clapton, James Galway, Michael Feinstein, the Honolulu Symphony, Hawaii Opera Theatre, jazz bassist Rufus Reid, shakuhachi master Riley Lee, soprano Dana Hanchard, and many other Hawaiian, classical, and jazz artist. KEOKI KAHUMOKU is carrying on the respected tradition of the Kahumoku family slack key style. Spent his early years in Bay Area while his father, Slack Key Master George Kahumoku, earned his masters degree in sculpture at the CA College of Arts and Crafts. His father was a Grammy Nominee on the Dancing Cat label.
SONNY LIM, a multi HOKU Award recipient, performs extensively in Hawaii and Japan. Born and raised on the Big Island, he is a member of the famous musical Lim family on the Big Island.
CHARLES MICHAEL BROTMAN, producer and solo recording artist with a background in classical and smooth jazz, plays a nylon string guitar, founder and leader of Hawaii's acoustic guitar trio KOHALA, a HOKU Award recipient and Grammy Nominee, founder and President of Palm Records, has performed extensively in Japan, and is the owner of Lava Tracks Recording Studio.
JOHN KEAWE - Multi HOKU award recipient. Born and raised on the Big Island in the heart of Paniolo country. Recipient of Hawaii's prestigious Ki ho'alu (Slack Key) Award in 2002.
CHARLIE RECAIDO is a member of Hawaii's acoustic guitar trio, Kohala. He is a former member of the group Summer and toured with them in US and Japan with Kalapana. Recaido lives in the heart of Paniolo country in Waimea on the Big Island. Works as an independent engineer and producer when he is not performing with Kohala. Charlie was born and raised in Hawaii.
JOHN CRUZ is a solo recording artist and multi HOKU award recipient. Although born and raised in Hawaii, John's development as a solo singer song writer was heavily influenced by the time he spent as a young musician writing and performing on the East Coast. "Acoustic Soul" is John's solo album that won multiple Hoku Awards and features him as a solo singer song writer.
KEN EMERSON has an eclectic style, is also know for his steel guitar performances, has toured and recorded with Taj Mahal, Pablo Cruz, Tod Rundgren and many of Hawaii's top artists. Keni Lived in the Bay area until he was 15 when he moved to Hawaii. He now splits his time between the Bay Area and Hawaii and tours Europe and the US. |
