Ray Sandoval is a composer, performer, producer and educator. A winner of numerous Classical Guitar awards, and trained in the Classical and Jazz Genres, Ray began studying music at the age of eight in Tucson, Arizona where he was born. His interest in music was sparked by his older brother, Richard Sandoval, and his first instruments were in percussion.
At the age of 15, serendipitous luck opened a door for Ray and his brother when they met Thomas Patterson, Professor at the University of Arizona, who offered the brothers to be the first pupils of APEX (Academic Preparation for Excellence), a program which offered dedicated music students the opportunity to take University classes to learn music. Through APEX, Ray intensely studied classical guitar.
During High School, Ray won his first classical guitar competition, The William Mullaney Guitar Competition and later the ASTA Competition for Strings. Ray pursued his studies in classical guitar under the tutelage of Thomas Patterson at the University of Arizona. In his sophomore year he won the Eugene Leonard Schaffer Classical Guitar Competition.
Ray's desire to develop as a musician lead him to continue his studies at The California Institute of the Arts (CalArts), where he studied 20th Century Music, World Music and Jazz Improvisation. Upon graduating from CalArts, Ray immediately began composing for theatre for works such as Iago, One Gun Family and Boda de Sangre. In response to his works and compositions, Ray was offered a position as the Music Director for Theatre at Plaza de La Raza School of Performing Arts, and he continued as director for seven years following his graduation. In 1995, Ray also started a group called Indigenous Colors, which incorporated jazz improvisation, hip hop and funk. His group toured until 1998. From Hip hop to classical guitar, Ray's talents and creativity continued to grow and soon reflect the amalgamation of culture found in Los Angeles and Ray began to find inspiration and produce a sound consisting and mixing of Afro-Cuban, Spanish and Brazilian sounds. In 1998 he was invited to perform at The Dame Myra Hess Memorial Concer Series at the Downtown Chicago Cultural Center, where he was featured as a solo artist. Ray continued to perform solo concerts throughout Los Angeles and Mexico.
In 1999, Ray accepted an offer to join the popular Los Angeles-based group Quetzal, which draws influences from latin jazz, soul, hip hop and folklore music to create a unique blend of politically conscious lyrics and infinite groove. Ray simultaneously completed and independently released his debut solo CD titled A La Naturaleza, which features an all acoustic ensemble of bass, drums, world percussion, piano and guitar and entails his personal composition and arrangement with influences of latin jazz, classical and world music. A year later, Music Camp Entertainment discovered Sandoval's A La Naturaleza and released the CD in Japan. Sandoval continued to compose and in 2002 Music Camp released Mi Ofrenda. Both records have been critically acclaimed and have placed Ray as a feature artist on magazines such as GQ, Esquire and Acoustic Guitar in Japan. Most recently Ray finished Suenos, a five song EP released in December 2002 on Music Camp Entertainment, which features original and traditional compositions from Mexico.
Sandoval continued touring through Japan while playing with Quetzal, promoting their Vanguard Release, Sing the Real, for which he also collaborated in various compositions. The Sing the Real tour ran throughout the United States, playing with groups such as Cubanismo, Los Lobos and the Just Push Play Tour featuring Aerosmith, Kid Rock and Run DMC.
