Intriguing & lyrical songs fused with elements of futurepop, ambient, dance, and world music.
THE EARLY CUTS is Elam's first FuturePop release. It represents his first 18 months of experimenting with various sonic tools and intense "incubative" songwriting (writing and developing lyrics, sounds, and textures away from outside influence). THE EARLY CUTS represents a small sampling of nearly 200 songs and lyrics that Elam wrote during this "incubative" process. The album is a fresh set of sounds and expressions to hear, completely accessible and still strangely elusive.
Interview (with Elam after completing THE EARLY CUTS)
Q: What does the album title mean? A: "Well I think the title speaks for itself... "The Early Cuts" is my first release of songs, so this album is a selection of my early cuts. Cuts in this case being finished/recorded tracks..."
Q: What kind of songs do you like to write? A: "I really enjoy writing about nature, scientific things, believing in the unreal, self-empowerment, and of course I also like to write about the "usual subjects" of love & loss."
Q: Where did this album's song ideas come from? A: "I place no limit on my sources of inspiration. Some of the songs are inspired by real people, places, and events in my personal life. Other songs come from "out of the blue", I guess you would call those fictional songs? Little Merry Jane is my favorite fictional song on The Early Cuts."
Q: How long did it take you to make this album? A: "This album was a true labour of love. All in all, the songs on this album were recorded and produced between August 2004 and March 2005. A majority of them were also written during that time, although some were written earlier - before I started recording."
Q: Who made that crazy album art?!? A: "I did it."
Q: Do you have anything extra to say about any of the songs on this album? A: "There's a percussion break at the very end of 'My Beautiful' that I like. Also, I like the ninth track, 'Never Mind'; the guitar and piano adds nice things to this song. Some day I want to do an album of songs that are accompanied by different kinds of guitar, plucked strings, pianos, harpsichords, and possibly harps + bells (but maybe not)... And Of Course, lots of percussion. But I guess I've gone off-topic... Umm, 'The Head Honcho' has a political side to it. And the eleventh track, 'Pot of Gold', I wrote it long before the other songs on this album. I remember it was very early August that I wrote this song along with an entire set of songs similar to it (it's a stripped-down style, ya know?). For some reason, hearing an old Robert Palmer song playing at an amusement park inspired this song & about 20 others! And lastly, Simply Alive is one of my favorite songs. It's about a person shedding the inferiority complex that pretty much everyone is programmed with these days. Realizing that you're here, you're alive, and it's not as bad as they may lead you to believe. Simply Alive."
Q: Anything else? A: "None of the songs for this album were ever actually intended for this album. Hah. In all, the songs on "The Early Cuts" represent a selection from three (or was it four?) original album-sets of songs. I will likely record many of the other songs at some point, too - it just so happened that these fifteen ended up fitting together nicely." |
