Dale Bruning is one of the most underrated jazz guitarists in the world. His playing is a major step into the lexicon of jazz.

Pennsylvania has produced some of the most renowned musicians in jazz. People like Ahmad Jamal, Benny Golson, Ethel Waters, Bobby Troup, Slide Hampton, Billy Bean, the Heath brothers, Ray Brown, Dennis Sandole, Erroll Garner, Mary Lou Williams, Specs Wright and Dale Bruning.
From his childhood days in Carbondale, Dale began his professional career at age 14. From 1953-57, he served in the Navy's band, which took him to Cuba, among other places. While there, he began to learn how to arrange music.
Entering Temple University in Philadelphia, he studied guitar and music theory with famed educator Dennis Sandole. Graduating from Temple in 1960 with a bachelor of arts degree in psychology and a minor in music, he became the leader of the house band for The Del Shields Show, a television variety program that originated from Philadelphia on WRCV, an NBC affiliate. In 1964, he and his family moved to Colorado, where he continues to live and work.
Among the many people with whom he has performed are:
Jim Hall, Red Norvo, Dizzy Gillespie, Specs Wright, Marian McPartland, Erroll Garner, Larry McKenna, Dave McKenna, Michael Moore, Terry Clarke, Jimmy DePriest, Al Grey, Odean Pope, Buddy Montgomery, Richard Grossman, Dick Cary, Morey Feld, Peanuts Hucko, Bobby Shew, Carol Sloane, Billy Bean, Ken Peplowski, John Allred, Carl Fontana, Slide Hampton, Buddy DeFranco, Gus Johnson, Johnny Smith, Art Van Damme, Jake Hanna, Lew Tabackin, Jon Erik Kelso, Eric Gunnison, Ron Miles, Chet Baker, Phil Urso, Bill Frisell, Nancy Wilson, Ethel Ennis, Mark Simon, Paul Romaine, Arthur Harper, John Pisano, Gene Bertoncini, Ron Anthony, Bruno Carr, and Ron Washington.
In 1995, he teamed up with writer and former student Jude Hibler to form their own record label, JLE (Jazz Link Enterprises). Additionally, they established a unique presentation format which includes original arrangements by Mr. Bruning and narration by Ms. Hibler throughout their Timeless Music of Great Songwriters Series. Among the songwriters they have focused on are Duke Ellington, Billy Strayhorn, Cole Porter, irving Berlin, Dave Brubeck, Benny Golson, Richard Rodgers, Oscar Hammerstein II, Lorenz Hart, Johnny Mandel, Johnny Mercer, Michel Legrand, Hoagy Carmichael, *Harold Arlen and *Harry Warren.

Mr. Bruning has authored The Dale Bruning Jazz Guitar Series: Volume I - Phrasing & Articulation (Jazz Link Enterprises, publisher,1997; 2006 Mel Bay Publishing) and will be publishing more books from his extensive music and guitar knowledge in the future for Mel Bay Publishing.
His prowess as a performer is equalled by his talent in composing, arranging and teaching. During his 40 plus years of private teaching, he has expressed the joy of jazz to more than 1000 students, many of whom went on to become professional musicians.
He is an important music educator in the United States, of whom former students Bill Frisell, Mark Patterson, and Bob Gillis can attest. Additionally, established professional musicians have studied with him, such as Tonk Edwards and Mark Simon. It is of little wonder that he has a waiting list of people who want to study with him.
As a performer, he is one of the most skilled musicians in the world. Audiences around the world only need exposure to his playing to come to appreciate this truth about him.
Until then, they can content themselves with any one of his recordings.
Mr. Bruning lives in Longmont, Colorado.
