The Black Sea was born of Instrumental Space Rock. It fell in love with Hip-Hop and 70's Jazz. It loves to watch Kung Fu movies and likes to throw obscure sound bytes into the mix. The long dj shadows of Air, David Holmes, DJ Food, DJ Cam, The Orb and Pink Floyd hang over Set and Setting. The record carries a funky edge but it can be soft and subtle as well. It is the modern sound of electronica mixed with live instrumentation and voice. Vibes, horns, percussion, organ, electric piano and synths of all shapes and sizes jam every song.
When music is compartmentalized and every sound is assigned a specific place with plenty of room to breathe, nothing is left to the listener's imagination. When music is dense and claustrophobic with little room to breathe, the listener can't absorb all the information and is forced to fill in the blanks with their own imagination. The theme of Set and Setting is drugs. It's an experience that can seem frighting and disorienting one minute and peaceful and calm the next. Enjoy the trip. |
