Beautiful cello sounds. A fine selection of solos recorded in the famous acoustics of the cathedral (limestone) cave.
In September 1997 I gave a concert series of 4 performances of the Suites for solo cello by J.S.Bach in the Cathedral Cave, part of the Jenolan Caves, Australia. The concerts proved so spectacular, that in January 1999 the series was repeated, this time with an extended program of medieval to Romantic music and compositions written especially for the warm and clear acoustics of the Cathedral Cave. This program was recorded on CD in the Cathedral Cave in July 2000. The series is still continuing, more than 4000 listeners came in more than 100 concerts to listen to the cello in this chamber.
The CD includes only recordings of: "Jenolan Ciaconna", "Fantasy on Cathedral Cave" (both written by me for the Cave) as well as "Poor Maiden me" or originally in German: Ich armes Maegdelein, collected in 1546 by M.Forster. I found this song in "Der Spielmann", 9th edition, 1928. The song has a different character than later German songs. After the 30 year war 1616-48 music remained stamped by the influence of military, rhytm became straighter, the time signature did not change from bar to bar, but no more than once in a song. Significantly this song was after 1933 taken out of later editions of the "Spielmann" and didn't make it back after the 2nd world war as it was probably forgotten (Der Spielkmann" is available to today). |
