ARTIST BIOGRAPHIES
Internationally acclaimed violinist Steven Moeckel began his musical career studying violin at the age of four under the tutelage of his mother. Possessed a fine singing voice, at the age of eleven, he joined the renowned Vienna Boys Choir, performing for two years as their principal soloist before leaving to focus solely on a career as a violinist. Mr. Moeckel studied at the Mozarteum in Salzburg under Professor Helmut Zehetmair, graduating with honors. He immediately won his first professional orchestral position as Co-concertmaster of the Ulm Philharmonic in Germany. After three years with the orchestra, he was granted a leave to study violin in America with Miriam Fried, Distinguished Professor of Violin at Indiana University, Bloomington. Upon completion of his studies, he began his American orchestral career when he won the position of Concertmaster with the Tucson Symphony in Spring, 2002. As soloist, Mr. Moeckel has appeared with orchestras throughout Europe, including the Pro Musica, Salzburger Musici, the Collegium Iuvenale Salesburgense and the Ulm Philharmonic. His extemsive command of solo repertoire includes performances of the Elgar, Tschaikovsky. Mozart and Berg Concertos as well as the works of Ysaye. Mr. Moeckel has also performed as soloist with the Tucson Symphony and as guest artist with the Pasadena
Symphony. Mr. Moeckel has appeared as chamber musician at such notable festivals as the Ravinia Festival of Chicago, performing with Leon Fleisher and Menahem Pressler. Internationally, he has performed as violinist of the Makart Trio Salzburg with Erika Frieser and Dana Micacoi and as first violinist of the
Auraeus Quartet.
Viviana Cumplido is currently in her second season as Principal Flutist of the Tucson Symphony Orchestra. While in Tucson she has been a featured guest artist at the 2004 University of Arizona Flute Festival as well as the St. Andrew's Bach Society Concert Series. Her previous orchestral experience includes performances with New World Symphony under the direction of Michael Tilson Thomas, National Orchestral Institute, National Repertory Orchestra, and American Institute of Musical Studies in Graz, Austria. She studied at the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Massachusetts where she received a Bachelor of Music degree and at the University of Southern California where she is received a Master of Music Performance. She has a keen interest in chamber music and played in the Soria Chamber Players, Echo Chamber Ensemble and Tuesday Night New Music, all in Boston.
Pianist Paula Fan has performed as soloist and chamber musician on five continents. As one of the first recipients of the doctorate in the art of accompanying, she has been in great demand as associate artist and coach for numerous internationally recognized singers and instrumentalists, and has lectured on the subject at educational institutions worldwide. With her husband and sonata partner, the late John Denman, Dr. Fan has recorded most of the masterworks of the clarinet repertoire as well as a number of the solo piano works of Dussek in new editions based on early printed sources. She has broadcast regularly for the BBC, National Public Radio, Radio Television China and other international stations. Currently Dr. Fan is pianist with the Tucson Symphony Orchestra and Coordinator of Keyboard Studies at the University of Arizona School of Music and Dance.
Marie Sierra is a pianist who accompanies and records extensively. Her most recent recordings include Seasons and An American Patchwork, both with Yamaha Artist, saxophonist Michael Hester. Marie is in demand as an accompanist throughout the United States and Mexico. She has performed at numerous conferences, including the 1997 ITEC in Riva del Garda, Italy and 2002 Conference in Greensboro, North Carolina. Marie has served on the faculties of the Belmont University in Nashville, and the Blair School of Music at Vanderbilt University. Mrs. Sierra earned her Bachelor's degree and Master's degree in Piano Performance at the University of Miami.
