Jim Donovan
"Revelation #9" can be best described as music for dancing irresponsibly. It's loud and proud .. think AC/DC meets Public Enemy smacking Crystal Method on it's ass while Meatbeat Manifesto watches....
This 9 track disc blends Jim's traditional thumping tribal drumming with elements of breakbeat, hip-hop, noise and loud gritty guitars. Revelation #9 features special guest vocalists: *Blowout (from Brooklyn NY's Turntable Anihilists) and *Liz Berlin (Rusted Root)
The disc was created between 2000-2003 in many states across the USA in Jim's mobile recording setup while on the road with Rusted Root. Revelation #9 was entirely performed, recorded, programmed, mixed and produced by Jim Donovan with the exceptions listed above.
Growing up in rural Pennsylvania, Jim Donovan was seven years old when he received a small drum made of a recycled coffee can from his grandmother and heard in it an eternal calling, a path to the rest of his life. He devoted himself to walking its terrain, and passed along the way small but important milestones. At age twelve a drumming corps invited him to crash cymbals. At fourteen he fought for, and won, the rights to the drum kit in the high school band. At sixteen he joined his music teacher as an equal in a jazz ensemble. The primitive howl he heard in that coffee can was evolving into a divine whisper, one that sent him into the University of Pittsburgh's classical music program and into the waiting arms of those musicians with whom he would create Rusted Root.
From their beginning in 1990, Rusted Root's goal was to recreate the spiritual rhythm of our primitive ancestry, unifying the energy of their audiences and bringing a timeless, resonant power to their music. Their mutual commitment to this goal defined a chemistry so great and immediate that within two months of forming they placed in the top four bands at a local Pittsburgh "Battle of the Bands" contest. With money from small club shows and their families, they recorded their debut album Cruel Sun in 1992, which sold over 30,000 copies in the 1st year of release and has since gone on to sell over 150,000. These sales and word of their powerful live concerts caught the attention of Mercury Records who signed them to a recording contract in 1993. Since then, they have recorded 4 full length CDs - When I Woke (2x platinum), Remember (gold), Rusted Root and Welcome to My Party. Additionally there are the 3 EPs - Rusted Root Live, Evil Ways, Airplane and a full-length concert home video, as well as several features for movie soundtracks including "Twister", "Home for the Holidays", Mathilda, and "Ice Age". In all their artistic efforts, Rusted Root's focus continues to be on the spiritual and unifying power of their music.
By 1998, Jim had reached a level of mastery that compelled him to share what he'd learned about the healing power of rhythm. This belief led him to Triloka Records and he recorded an idea he had been developing since 1994 entitled Indigo: Music for Exploration and Evolution. This is an extended piece of repetitious hypnotic music, which listeners could use directly for spiritual exploration, a catalyst for altering consciousness to assist meditation and relaxation. In 1999 he recorded drums on "Live from Earth", a CD by Triloka label mate and co-founder Krishna Das.
Recently Jim has built an educational program that includes drumming workshops, drum set clinics and lectures. He teaches across the US at festivals, high schools, universities and specialty venues. To assist in his drumming education classes Jim has released two companion CDs Rhythm and Drumming Workshop Vol. 1 and Vol. 2. Volume 3 will be released in 2003. Along the lines of Indigo he released the next installment of the "Music for Exploration" series in 2000 entitled Pulse. Pulse was created together with fellow Pittsburgh ambient music pioneers Life in Balance who, with Jim, create a beautifully hypnotic environment that weaves trance hand-drumming with quartz crystal bowls, shakuhachi and bansuri flutes.
Most recently you can hear Jim on the newest Rusted Root album entitled Welcome To My Party. Jim's inventively solid drumming is featured on each track as well as on his collaboration with Rusted Root singer/guitarist Mike Glabicki on "People Of My Village," a thumping, techno-tinged track that nevertheless showcases Jim's rhythmic talents, including newly acquired computer skills.
"I had just started to use my computer as a brand new instrument and it opened me up to a zillion rhythmic possibilities I could have never played on my own. 'People Of My Village' is one of my favorites. It relates to everything we've done in the past but still breaks new ground for Rusted Root. That's why I love playing with this band. It's always been about pushing boundaries and not confining ourselves to any preconceived limitations."
Since June 2002 Jim has been writing a monthly lesson column in Drum! Magazine, the #1 drum magazine in the world.
In all his ventures, Jim is dedicated to giving of his self the music that was given to him. In order to do that, he knows he must master not only the technical qualities of the craft, but mind, body, and spirit, as well; for one must give a gift purely if he hopes to receive it so. Jim's dedication and practice of yoga, humility, gratitude, love, writing, and teaching are what allows the rhythm to arrive purely through his hands. He strives for the essence and quality of that first drum, that first glimpse into the divine eternal rhythm which heals us, unites us, helps us realize our strength in love, in peace and kindness, in our common, spiritual ancestry.
